Flavor & aroma
Discovered in 2021 as a standout open-pollinated seedling at the legendary Segal Ranch in Grandview, Washington, Tangier represents an exciting, next-generation aroma cultivar tailored for modern recipe design. Originally evaluated under the experimental code EXP 24-25, this variety thrives in the rich, volcanic ashy loam terroir of the lower Yakima Valley. Agronomically, it is a robust and visually striking plant that yields beautifully structured, bright green cones packed with highly concentrated, golden lupulin. Specifically selected for its ability to deliver a pure, unadulterated citrus punch that translates flawlessly into the glass, Tangier has quickly captured the attention of top-tier brewers for its exceptional performance on both the hot and cold sides of the brewhouse.
The sensory signature of Tangier is a high-amplitude celebration of pure citrus, exploding with an aromatic intensity that perfectly mirrors the smell of a freshly peeled, sun-ripened orchard fruit. The bouquet leads with a massive, front-forward top note of juicy tangerine and sweet navel orange zest. This bright canopy opens up into a luscious mid-palate reminiscent of smooth orange creamsicle, accented by sweet vanilla undertones and fragrant orange blossom honey. Grounding this vibrant experience is a crisp, clean background of soft tropical fruits, sweet melon, and a delicate touch of fresh-cut grass. Thanks to its clean oil chemistry and incredibly high volatile oil content, Tangier entirely bypasses the heavy resinous burn, tire rubber, or aggressive, onion-like dankness often found in intense Pacific Northwest hybrids.
If you can't find Tangier, the best alternatives are Amarillo®, Citra®, Mandarina Bavaria, or Zumo.
